Certain places tend to be associated with certain events or people. For example you might think of Liverpool with the Beatles or with football. With Oxford, you might associate it with the university and learning. Whitehaven in Cumbria has been known as being a small fishing port in the North West England for hundreds of years. Now since the shootings of 2nd June 2010, it will forever be associated as a place of death in many people’s minds. No doubt the media will lump it together with those other two towns in Britain where mass murder took place, namely Hungerford and Dunblane.
These three towns happen to be the places where disturbed men with access to guns, meant for use in gun clubs, chose to kill or hurt other human beings, who happened to be in their way. Not only were individual families devastated by these events, but also whole communities and the country at large. Mass shootings are events that happen occasionally, but they have the potential to happen anywhere in the world; in fact in any place where humans have guns.
The truth is that somewhere in the world, every day dozens of people are being shot by guns. Sometimes it might be lone individuals in a crime ridden city like Los Angeles. Or it might be in a war zone, like
Afghanistan, where soldiers are shooting at the enemy. No matter who pulls the trigger and who takes the bullet, all this is the result of someone in the past inventing the gun. Since then, others have developed the initial design and created more sophisticated guns, which can kill scores of individuals in mere seconds.
Thankfully most of us don’t carry guns because we don’t feel the need to have a gun to protect us. We are not afraid like those who carry a gun. Carrying a gun means you have the potential to hurt or kill another human being and I don’t believe that is what we should be doing with our lives. No matter how much we might get angry with another human being, we do not have to commit the ultimate destructive act. We are here to create and not to destroy. Guns are the ultimate weapons of mass destruction, yet Hollywood likes to glorify the use of guns, as do the creators of the thousands of violent video computer games. Sadly millions of children and young people are being fooled into thinking that having a gun is cool. Maybe it’s time for those of us who know better to show that having a gun is the worst thing to have. The more we as humans choose not to carry and use guns, the more the world will become a safer better place.
