The Arab Spring
takes hold in
Cairo, Egypt
As we finally leave 2011 and enter the year 2012 at last, it’s been quite an action packed last twelve months…..
One of the biggest news items of 2011 was the so called Arab Spring, where various dictators of Arab nations had to give up their power due to people pressure. It began in Tunisia in January and spread across North Africa to the Middle East with the people in the countries of Egypt, Libya, Syria, Bahrain, Qatar and Iran all saying “enough is enough”. Whilst the movement was ultimately successful in Libya and Egypt, in Syria and Iran the struggle still continues with thousands dying as a result.
Then in February in New Zealand almost 200 were killed by an earthquake, which was followed by an even bigger one just off the coast of Japan on 11th March. This led to the destructive Tsunami where almost 16,000 lost their lives and the issue of the dangers of nuclear power came to the world’s attention, as though it was a wake up call.
Other natural disasters included yet more floods in Australia and tornadoes in America and droughts in Africa with approximately 30,000 children dying there.
On a positive note we had the Royal wedding of Prince William and Kate Middleton in April, which although not as popular as his mother and father’s wedding thirty years earlier, there was still a global audience of 2 billion people watching it on TV.
The following month we were told of the “death” of Osama Bin-Laden, though conveniently his body was buried at sea. Then we saw the end of the News of the World newspaper as a result of the phone hacking scandal. The summer also saw the riots in many towns of Britain, which shocked and surprised many people, but again was it a wake up call not to neglect our young people?
In September we saw the 20th anniversary of Cygnus Books, which is a fantastic achievement by founders Ann and Geoff Napier. In case you don’t know, Cygnus Books provides a free monthly magazine packed with inspiring articles and a wide choice of spiritually based books, as well as books on health, personal development and esoteric subjects. All books are much cheaper than you would expect to pay for in your local bookshop, and if you are not happy with a book you can send it back for a full refund, no questions asked. I personally have been blessed by the many authors I have come into contact with through Cygnus Books, including Neil Donald Walsch, Diana Cooper, Lorna Byrne, Chris Thomas and David Hamilton to name but a few. My favourite book of the year was one I bought through Cygnus Books, namely Gill Edwards’ Conscious Medicine. Sadly Gill passed away in November, but her legacy lives on.
We did try to get her come onto the Spirit Guides radio show for an interview, but she always declined. Now I understand why.
The autumn saw the birth of the Occupy Movement which led to the setting up of tent cities in many towns in both America and Europe including New York, where the tenth anniversary of 911 was remembered. Yet ironically, the Occupy protest (about the way the 1% cream off all the money, whilst the 99% rest of us lose out to the bankers and politicians) was brutally stopped in New York. The protest still continues in London, though for how much longer?
Still, it is perhaps the first drips of an ocean waiting to break through as money continues to collapse all around us. For instance in the Autumn we heard about the monetary problems in Greece, then Italy, then Portugal, and

the probable collapse of the Euro as a currency. Then in December, the last American troops finally left Iraq, at a cost to the American taxpayer of $800 billion dollars, not to forget 100,000 Iraqis, (mostly civilians) and 4,500 US troops dead and a country internally divided. So much for a war, to find some non-existent weapons of mass destruction.
So what have we got to look forward to in 2012?
The end of the world….. if you believe some people. Well maybe not. Much has been said at the Mayan prophecies, which I won’t go into here. But I personally see 2012 as the end of one era and the start of a new one. (Some teachers now see 2032 as the next “Holy Grail” by the way). Hopefully 2012 will see the end of more dictators and institutions. It would be wonderful if the people could be freed of their oppressors in the Arab countries; not to forget Asian countries like Burma, Tibet and North Korea, where the dictator/leader Kim Jong has recently died. Also it would be nice for logging to stop in the rainforests and all the endangered animals to be protected from extinction. All that takes time and effort from determined people, who aren’t prepared to put up with the status quo. We all can help to do something. We all have a responsibility for the community we live in and the Earth we walk on, Thanks to modern communications like the internet, little by little, people are starting to see themselves as part of the whole world, rather than just a part of an area of land that they live in.
At least many people are starting to wake up to what life is all about and are starting to read between the lines and see what lies behind the “official” view of what those in power want us to hear. We are not just spiritual beings on Earth, but also human beings, each with a part to play in our own smaller worlds, which ultimately make up the world we live in. We may have problems and issues in our own lives, which take up our time and energy, but we are also part of a greater world which needs us. What we give out, ultimately comes back to us.
With the dawn of 2012, there will be much in the media about what is going to happen at the end of the year, especially on December 21st. Before that many things will have happened on Earth, such as the continuing unusual weather patterns, earthquakes and tsunamis; people will still be starving because food isn’t distributed fairly; people will still be fighting in wars because those in power still allow weapons to be made and sold; and money will continue to lose its power and influence as people start to realise that money corrupts and isn’t the answer to what they really need in life.
I’m not going to predict what major events will happen in 2012, though of course the year 2012 will see the historic events of the Olympic Games and the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee. Instead, we should continue to look inward through meditation and our spirituality, as well as listening to our Angels. Spirit Guides, Higher Selves, or the Universe, or whatever force we might believe in. Always expect the unexpected and question everything. Take time to chill out and relax. (Music and laughter are the best forms of relaxation I say!). Then you will be prepared for whatever happens in your lives and in the world in 2012. Be positive about the future and send out love and light, and you will be ready for the future as it unfolds in 2012 and beyond that.
With love and blessings
